Regulations and Security

The legal characteristics of nautical trailers.

The MMA of a trailer refers to the Maximum Authorized Mass that it can have when driving on public roads, once loaded.

An approval is the procedure that certifies that a type of vehicle, system or component complies with the administrative provisions and relevant technical requirements required by the European Economic Area (EEA). It is processed by a State Member .

License B

  • The towing vehicle must not exceed 3,500kg of MMA.
  • The trailer must not exceed 750kg of MMA.
  • The trailer does not require its own registration or driving license.
  • The trailer does not require passing the ITV, although you must have the ITV card.

License B96

  • The combined towing vehicle and trailer must not exceed 4,250 kg.
  • Requires passing a practical skills test.

License B+E

  • The towing vehicle must not exceed 3,500kg of MMA.
  • The trailer must not exceed 3,500kg of MMA.
  • The trailer requires its own registration (red license plate) and circulation permit.
  • The trailer must pass the Vehicle Inspection Test when required (ITV).
  • Identification numbers must appear on the trailer plate.
  • Requires a reference to the coupling system installed on the trailer.

IMPORTANT TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT:

  • We must take into consideration the towbar that connects to the vehicle. It should not be more than 15% of the total length of the platform.
  • Trailers are classified by the maximum load they can bear, and it is recommended that 85% of the total capacity is never exceeded. It is also advisable to find the balance of the trailer by means of the drawbar or the axle to give it a correct balance point and that the driving is more stable and safer.

If the trailer is not balanced properly, the weight may be concentrated at the rear, causing the trailer to tilt backward, causing lack of traction to the vehicle and lifting of the rear wheels. If the weight is concentrated in the area of the hitch, it will load on the rear wheels of the towing vehicle and can lead to braking problems.
